Oversized is not going anywhere. But there is a difference between a fit that looks intentional and one that just looks too big. Here is how to get the first one right this season.
Start with the right kind of oversized
Not every big garment is oversized in a good way. What you want is a cut designed with volume, not a regular cut sized up three steps.
Our boxy fit is built for this. The body is wide and straight, the shoulders drop slightly, and the length stops around the hip. That means the piece looks relaxed without swallowing you. The sleeves have room, but the cuffs still hold at the wrist.
If you are between sizes, try both. Your usual size gives a clean boxy look. One size up gives more drape and a softer silhouette.
Balance volume with shape
The simplest rule: if one part of the outfit is big, keep another part more controlled.
- Boxy top, straighter bottom. A wide hoodie with straight leg sweatpants or slim trousers keeps the outline clean.
- Volume on both. If you go wide on top and bottom, as with a hoodie and wide leg sweatpants, keep colours tonal so the look stays calm.
- Show a little structure. Push the sleeves up, tuck the front of a tee, or let a collar show under a crewneck.
Layering for cold evenings
Oversized pieces are made for layering, which is useful when the evenings turn cold. A few combinations that work:
- A heavyweight tee under a boxy hoodie, with the hem of the tee just visible.
- A crewneck under a coach jacket. The Hit Rock Bottom Coach Jacket works well over a sweatshirt.
- A zip hoodie open over a crewneck for two layers of texture in the same tone.
The trick is to keep the layers in the same colour family. Grey on grey, black on black, or off white with washed neutrals.
Colour, prints and how to wear them
Picture a grey hoodie on an evening street. One colour, one shape, and it works because nothing is competing.
That is a good starting point. Build the base of the outfit in one or two washed tones, and if you want a print, let it be the only one. Our varsity, drip and cloud hoodies or a worldwide tee are made to carry an outfit on their own, so pair them with plain pieces.
Shoes and finishing touches
With oversized clothes, footwear matters more than you might think. Chunkier sneakers balance a wide silhouette. Slim shoes can make the top half look heavier.
Keep accessories simple. A cap, a small bag or a plain beanie is enough. The clothes are doing the talking already, and too many extras only take attention away from the shape you worked to get right.
Oversized works best when it looks easy. Pick one great boxy piece, balance it with something cleaner, and keep the colours quiet.
