Heavy on purpose: oversized in womenswear.

Heavy on purpose: oversized in womenswear.

A grey hoodie, hood up, sleeves just past the wrist. It is one of the most worn looks in any city, and it has never belonged to one gender. The runways have spent the last few seasons saying the same thing in more expensive language.

The line keeps blurring

At Acne Studios' spring/summer 2026 show, V Magazine described a collection that deliberately mixed menswear and womenswear codes. Broad shouldered blazers, baggy straight leg leather and denim trousers and boxy utility shirts sat next to lace mesh and bustier dresses. The point was not to make women look like men. It was to show that the two vocabularies work together.

Closer to home, Vogue Scandinavia noted that A-DSGN, debuting at Stockholm Fashion Week in June 2026, paired structured corsetry with gently oversized silhouettes. Again, volume next to shape.

And in Paris this autumn, oversized jackets appeared across a long list of spring/summer 2027 womenswear shows, from Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham to Dior and Studio Nicholson, according to T-Fashion's runway tracking.

Why oversized keeps winning

Part of it is comfort, and there is nothing wrong with admitting that. But the bigger reason is that a well cut oversized piece gives you control. It hides nothing by accident. You decide where the volume goes and where the line stays clean.

It also makes a wardrobe more flexible. A boxy hoodie works with wide trousers, with a slip skirt, with leggings on the way to training and with a long coat on top in winter. The same piece changes character depending on what is around it.

How to make it look intentional

The difference between oversized and too big comes down to a few choices.

Choose a garment that is designed with volume, not a regular cut in a larger size. Look for dropped shoulders, a wide straight body and cuffs that still hold at the wrist.

Balance it. If the top is big, keep something else more fitted, like straight trousers, a short skirt or a slimmer boot.

Play with proportion on purpose. Push the sleeves up. Let a collar show at the neck. Tuck just the front of a tee underneath.

Stay in one colour family. Washed grey on grey, or black on black, keeps a big silhouette calm.

On sizing: your usual size in a boxy fit gives a clean shape. One size up gives more drape and a softer line. Try both if you can.

Made to be shared

Our pullover hoodie in washed grey is 400 GSM French terry, oversized and boxy with a kangaroo pocket. It is heavy on purpose, which is exactly why it hangs right on different bodies. We cut most of our pieces with that in mind: one shape, worn your way.
